Below, Scott Mitchen holds a pair of slave shackles from the La Trompeuse. The poem below was written by Mitchen while at sea on the expedition to find the La Trompeuse.

Uncovering the History Which
Lies Hidden Beneath the Waves

I want to be where no one’s been before
Back to a time that is no more
While riding the waves, or sifting the sand
Thinking about the history
At the tip of my hands.

I’m sailing the seas with those pirates a’ roar
Or trading my wares on some distant shore
I’m bracing a storm on a rough rainy night
Praying I’ll see the bright morning light.

While riding the waves or sifting the sand
Going back through time is a feeling so grand.

I’m carrying much wealth back home to Spain
It was mined by the Indians with a great deal of pain
I’m fighting a ship from some distant land
While holding a sword in the palm of my hand.

While riding the waves or sifting the sand
I take a trip—to a far away land.

There’s ballast that came from the rivers of Spain
There’s pottery and many a nail
There’s tool they used, and dice for play
Oh must it been like in a gale.

There’s bottles of rum and jugs of wine
Not to mention the kegs of ale
It’s amazing the miles they traveled the seas
With only the aid of a sail.

While riding the waves or sifting the sand
Oh how the memories linger
To be such a part of history
With only the touch of a finger.

There’s shackles and chains from a time long ago
A feeling that has no thunder
It’s the sad part of this trip down memory lane
The part that makes me wonder.

I want to be where no one’s been before
Back to a time that is no more
So I fall down beneath the waves of the sea
To open a history book
Which lies before me.

The Will series of books begins with the first in the series, "Will of the Pirates". The first book is a fictional novel based on fact and discoveries of an actual pirate ship by world-famous explorer, Scott Mitchen who together with his business partner Tony Kopp, discovered the La Trompeuse off the coast of St. Thomas in the Caribbean.

The ship sank in 1683 and 307 years later Mitchen/Kopp made the discovery. The day of the discovery was an amazing moment in Mitchen's life. Feeling like a kid with the discovery of his life, he sat on his exploring vessel on the waves far above the pirate wreckage and immediately began jotting down notes for a pirate story, "the moment catalyzed within me an overwhelming need to share this experience with kids across the world," says Mitchen. "I just knew that my own fascination with pirates and sunken treasure had lead me to read, investigate my local library, and dig into cartography and exploration. Finding a way to share the exploration experience with kids would likely center around a book series based on actual pirate treasure, discovery, and, of course, 'the map'".

Mitchen got right to work on the book but postponed the production to explore the depths of Lake Superior for a number of years. After returning to the book project in 2005 Mitchen again drew upon his fascination with pirates, treasure, and the many fables of the pirate Captain Hamlyn that had punctuated his life through the 1980's. Drawing on resolve of his boyhood curiosity he commenced the writing of the book "Will of the Pirates".

A prologue of the story can be seen on the home page of this site. It is this story that Mitchen builds on in book two, "Will of the Islands".

Will of the Islands, picks up where Will of the Pirates left off. Will, now in possession of the stone and the map, intends to return home to his mother only to be drawn into the mystere of the Caribbean islands that beckon him with the promise of heightened adventure. As he eludes the ominous characters of the first book and further forging friendships with those allies he has come to trust, Will sets out to seek his calling amidst the islands.

"I can already name several of the students I am tutoring who
will absolutely gobble up 'Will of the Pirates'."  -Tali

"This book was absolutely amazing! Not only does it include the great adventures that obviously tail the life of pirates, it includes real
historical facts! Knowing that the La Trompeuse was real, has
been discovered, and artifacts from it can be seen 'Ashland, WI'
makes each and every detail more tangible. It's as though I was living
the life of Will Davies myself! It's factual fantasy that every individual
ought to read, read, and read again! It's sure to astound every audience
that has the chance to grasp this literary treasure!" -Michelle

"I just ordered my son Matthew your book.  He is very excited.
I don’t think there is a kid who is not interested in reading
about or playing pirates.  Thanks!"  -Harold
